Make Your Movie Now: Why Delay is the Wrong Choice


How many times have you looked at the calendar and realized another year, or maybe even five, has passed without your film being made?


Do you feel like time is just... slipping away?


I see it all the time. Brilliant, creative, and passionate filmmakers who have a story that
needs to be told, yet they are still standing on the sidelines. If you’re nodding your head, I want you to take a deep breath. I have something very important to tell you: It is NOT your personal failing.



You aren’t "lazy." You aren’t a "procrastinator." And you certainly aren’t "not cut out for this."



What’s actually happening is that you’ve hit one of the classic
"stuck places." In my years of working as a CEO, Business Coach, and Film Producer, I’ve realized that nearly every filmmaker gets stuck in the exact same spots. These hurdles are high, and trying to jump them alone is why so many people stall out.



Where I most often see filmmakers struggle is in the transition from
dreaming to doing. And that’s where I come in. The truth is, it’s almost impossible to navigate these stuck places without support and mentorship.



Let’s look at the three most common places filmmakers get stuck, and how you can break through them

1. The Perpetual Rewrite: The "Is My Script Good Enough?" Trap

This is perhaps the most "noble" way to delay. You tell yourself, "I’m just making it better." "It needs one more polish." "Once it’s perfect, then I’ll start the business side of things."



Does this sound familiar?


One of my absolute favorite classes to teach is called
"Is My Script Good Enough?" In this class, we dive deep into the psychology of the filmmaker. What we almost always uncover is a hidden belief that some "authority figure" out there is eventually going to tap you on the shoulder and tell you that your script is finally ready.


I’m here to tell you: That person doesn’t exist.


Waiting for external validation is a recipe for a film that never gets made. We move through these limiting beliefs and uncover a much more powerful reality:
It is up to YOU to greenlight your film.

Does this mean you stop writing? Of course not. You may very well continue improving your script, polishing the dialogue, and tightening the structure. But, and this is a BIG but, you must also move forward with raising the money to actually produce the film at the same time.

In the industry, we call this development. Big studios don't wait for a perfect script to start budgeting and looking for financing. They do it simultaneously. You have to decide that your story is worth telling and start the film financing process today.

2. Choice Paralysis: "I Don't Know Which Script to Start With"

I see this "stuck place" constantly. You have three, four, or maybe ten scripts in a drawer. One is a sci-fi epic, one is a quiet indie drama, and another is a quirky rom-com. You love them all, so you do... nothing.


This happens because most filmmakers haven't been given the
business information they need to make a sensible decision. Without an understanding of how the film industry actually works, choosing a script feels like a purely emotional gamble.


But it shouldn't be a gamble.

When you lay out all your scripts in front of you, it is entirely possible to figure out which is the best and most ATTAINABLE choice. This is where mentorship and strategic coaching become your secret weapon. We look at things like:

  • Marketability: What are distributors looking for right now?

  • Budget Realism: Which of these can be produced at a high level with the resources you can realistically access?

Genre Demand: Where is the "gap" in the market that your film can fill?

By applying basic business logic, the "right" choice usually reveals itself pretty quickly. You stop spinning your wheels and start focusing your energy on the project that actually has the best chance of getting
funded, produced, and distributed.

3. The Funding Trap: No Budget vs. Personal Debt

This is the "big one." The most common place to get stuck is
how to raise money for their film. Because filmmakers are highly creative, they tend to get "creative" with their financing, and usually, that leads to a dead end.



There are two major traps I see filmmakers fall into:

1. The "No Money" Trap

You think, "I know! I'll just make it for zero dollars with my friends!" While this sounds romantic and "indie," the harsh reality is that this almost always leads to
ZERO DISTRIBUTION.


In today’s market, quality matters. Production value matters. If you don't have the budget to pay your crew, secure professional sound, and handle post-production properly, your film will likely sit on a hard drive forever. That isn't a career launcher; it's a hobby.

2. The "Out of Pocket" Trap

This is the one that breaks my heart. You think, "I'll just put it on my credit cards" or "I'll spend my entire life savings because I believe in this project."

STOP.


I have a very firm
HARD RULE: No debting to make films.


Going into massive personal debt doesn't launch a career; it creates a financial prison that makes it impossible to make your
next film. I don't believe in using your rent money to pay for a location.


I believe in
RAISING MONEY.


Independent film financing is a skill that can be learned. Whether it’s through private investors, crowdfunding, or strategic partnerships, there is a proven path to getting your film funded without ruining your personal life.
